You can't simply Y in an external drum brain to the ion brain.  The interfaces are not compatible.  You would need the ion expansion box to accompolish this.  With the ion expansion box, there is no need to ever swap cables once its hooked up.  You can play your drums with rockband and your drum module together, or independently.
