Functionally they perform the same way.  Both have velocity sensitivity and cymbal sounds.  Its more of a savings to you if you have one of the rb2 or ion brain to send.  The rb2 version has knobs in the front and ion version has trims on the bottom of the box adjusable with a small screwdriver.  The ion version is in a smaller sleeker box.
